Emergency Medical Travel Insurance
Buy travel insurance online:
GMS TravelStar - Individual travel insurance, including emergency medical and trip cancellation. For someone under the age age 35, a 15 day trip is less than $20 total. A 55-year-old would pay less than $30 for the same trip. Please note the restrictions regarding pre-existing conditions.
Whether you are taking a quick cross-border trip to Seattle, a golf holiday in Palm Springs, or visiting Disneyland, emergency medical travel insurance is a necessary precaution.
This is especially important when traveling to the United States as emergency hospital care can cost many thousands of dollars per day. Medical travel insurance reimburses you for emergency medical costs over and above what the B.C. Medical Services Plan (MSP) pays.
The average reimbursement by the B.C. provincial health plan for emergency out-of-country claims averages between 10 - 20% of the claim, leaving the individual to pay a whopping bill from their own resources. Fortunately, travel health insurance can be purchased to cover this cost either on a per trip basis or an annual basis. There are factors to be aware of when purchasing this insurance, for example, pre-existing conditions are usually not covered.
To prevent purchasing this insurance twice, check your employee benefit plan booklet or your preferred credit card. You may already have some level of emergency medical travel insurance.
